This is a problem I have as well based on the two Longsword variants we've been shown, the C709 and C712. The biggest problem with the longsword as a fighter is its size The longsword and broadsword would go to out last the saber and carry over the improvements to the saber(shields) The smaller single manned fighters are as effective as the longsword in dealing with enemy fighters, at their relative size. Tdlr the shortsword is out of date and longsword can do its job and fight in deep space at the same time, These fighters lack the sheer firepower of the longsword in regards to weapons carried I mean (110mm rotary cannon come on) but will be Easier to carry in ships and likely be cheaper to manufacture, and be able to effectively engage the opponent (sarphs) They were created with the idea of speed and agility been there strongest attributes. The unsc has operated single seater fighters from the start of the war, this was in the form of the S-14 Baselard Space Striker, armed with 2 archer missiles, the broadsword was introduced in the 2530s and the saber in 2547. The biggest problem with the longsword as a fighter is its size, it is larger than a 747(?) and prevents it been used in serious numbers on anything up to a cruiser, take the unsc commonwealth a Paris class frigate it was only able to carry 2 long swords, and the pillar of autumn only carried 5. It was then mostly replaced with a smaller variant of the long sword by the end of the war,we see these in halo reach used by the unsc air force.
HALO REDDIT SABRE OR BROADSWORD SERIES
The long sword was the main space fighter and bomber for the majority of the human covenant war, the short sword basically was over taken by the longsword in the bombing role in both atmosphere and deep space, with it been effectively obsolete for a series of reasons.
